Limited Access to Opioid Treatment has Plagued Rural NorCal
Northern California addiction treatment must adequately understand the difficulties that our NorCal neighbors have experienced when it comes to the far-reaching impacts of addiction. According to the Sacramento Bee in rural Northern California, we have seen some of the highest rates of opioid overdoses – at times more 3 times the statewide average for certain counties. Opioid prescriptions are also very high among Northern California counties including Lake, Mendocino, and Humboldt, so high in fact, that they are more numerous than the counties population.
A recent report details this crisis published by the California Health Care Foundation and led by a pioneering physician at the forefront of the opioid crisis in California: Dr. Kelly Pfeifer, MD. Dr. Pfeifer advocates for Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and for primary care physicians to take the lead in the crisis. “All of us in primary care unwittingly contributed to the epidemic by liberally prescribing opioids, believing that addiction was rare and high doses were safe,” Dr. Pfeifer states, “There are not enough addiction specialists to manage the problem. If not us, who?”
At Olympia House, Northern California addiction treatment or substance abuse treatment is provided in a safe, comfortable setting which we have found to be ideal for the residents of the larger NorCal region.
Even places where drug use has seemingly stabilized over the years, there is no escaping the harsh reality of the crisis of addiction in Sacramento. CNN reported that in early 2016, fentanyl-laced pills labeled as a much weaker prescription painkiller resulted in 6 deaths and 28 overdoses in Sacramento alone. Along the other alarming drug-related incidents that reflect the challenge we face as a nation and with the staggering rate of opioid prescribing and lack of treatment options in the rural areas of our state, Northern California as a whole, faces a crisis that should not be underestimated.
Olympia House has refused to back down and provides treatment for those residing in Yolo County, Mendocino County, and in the Broader Northern California area. We are proud to provide MAT and other evidence-based interventions including individualized counseling and group therapy among many others. We are dedicated to the health and prosperity of our Northern California and Sacramento residents who face addiction.
