Traumatic events are those that create severe emotional, psychological (and sometimes physical) pain, which are abnormal to the human experience.
“Traumatic events are extraordinary, not because they occur rarely, but rather because they overwhelm the ordinary human adaptations to life.” – Judith Herman, Trauma and Recovery
The after-effects of traumatic experiences can influence our perceptions, reactions and interactions with the world. The use of drugs and alcohol to mitigate painful feelings of grief, debilitating fear, and unbearable resentment can eventually lead to the build-up of both physical and emotional dependence upon drugs and/or alcohol. As a result, one’s emotional and mental capacity to process and cope with past traumatic experiences is severely diminished over time.
Through individualized treatment, we work with each person to uncover the effects of experienced trauma. Furthermore, we educate the individual about the ways in which trauma can interact with addiction. Our focus is on developing coping strategies and ongoing healing.
